I saw the symbol for a bat, stuck in one place, above ground, on the mini map. I thought maybe he had been killed like foxes are sometimes, since it wasn't moving. When I went to take a closer look, no bat.

Did it look like there was a tree where the bat should be? They hide in trees.

Be careful, sometimes they spawn in clusters and can kill you quite easily.
