Lifted items disappear after logging out next to cave wall

I was just holding a barrel of water while checking a cave for metals, and Ender's Client crashed. It only took about ten seconds to get back in-game, but once I did the barrel was nowhere to be found. Just a minute earlier the same thing had happened, but I wasn't standing next to any objects when it happened. I logged back in and the barrel was right next to me, waiting to be lifted.

The same thing happened a few days ago with a boat, as a matter of fact.


If this is something that's already been mentioned before, I'm sorry for the repeat post but I searched "cave walls" and "lifted items" and got nothing relevant.

This has been reported before. We are not entirely sure how it happens in caves, but objects can indeed disappear/be destroyed when they don't find a suitable landing site.

I guess I should've gone with "lifted object". Noted for the future.

I can totally accept that as just the way things are, but I'd like to say that there was literally one tile of cave around me when the barrel disappeared. It was in front of me but I mentioned it happening earlier in the same cave and the barrel had landed on the tile behind me. Is the tile an object drops onto chosen at random?

It should try to find several locations, so we do find it strange, yes, but have been unable to determine the cause.
