Dowsing rod madness

Hello guys. It looks like the DR is heavily glitchy - a few of us have tried locating a well around our village (it lays between a river at our south, and a lake at the north, though the patch of land is good 2-3 minimaps), and failed miserably. I personally have been running around with that effing stick for hours, and got nothing (been looking for that 'tiny patch of water' everyone mentions). Thought that it might be affected by Perc*Exp, called out our forager, and solemnly handed him over this task. He had crafted his own DR on my request, and gave up the fruitless search about a hour later.
Apple pie shows presence of water in seemingly random direction, and when you walk in this direction for a minute or even less, it starts pointing in the other direction, and it keeps flailing around. It even keeps pointing in the cave, where it shouldn't. Is something wrong with our water seeking practices, or is it bugged indeed?
