Caving in beside mine support

I have a mine support literally 2 tiles away and its still caving in.

Is this a bug or what? I-is it safe to keep mining under the support? Are supports pointless?

To show you that it could cave-in when mining one of the tiles around this - should you not have that one supported.

The dust shows that there is an unstable tile touching that tile (ie one of the eight tiles surrounding it will cause a collapse)
However, the mine support stops unstable tiles near it from collapsing, so the dust means nothing to you.
