You still gain a card if you use the combat discovery while the target has defenses up. Dunno if it's a bug or if it was changed and I missed it.

Maybe youre hitting little bit through defenses.

If you have enough weight to break the defense then you get the discovery

Suspect you broke the defense and punched through for some.
