I believe they have a CHANCE of converting HHP damage of certain kinds into HHP leechburns.

For every 1 SHP dmg taken by a leech, you have a CHANCE of ''recovering'' one HHP (Leech burn).

The chance increases with the quality of the leech. And you can take leech burns without getting the healing effect. Since the burns heal fairly rapidly, it's not hard to reapply leeches frequently to heal a troublesome wound.
