I live several deep water rivers away from mountains, and I found a live mammoth by my base today. Maybe he spawned on a little bit of quarry when some other player went by? Otherwise he spawned on the red plains.

I saw one yesterday in the grasslands next to a mountain. Scared the shit out of me. First time I've ever seen one outside a mountain so maybe they changed it.

they used to spawn on some grasslands,dont know exact type,since beggining

there is a smaller chance of spawning on grasslands but maybe he just wandered away from a mountain

This is penalty of unchecked industry of the hearthlings. You all did thinking you may spew your black cloud of production over these land for not issue? Burning your coal and oils, you read what you did sow now. Nature is lose its home, and dog do not bite until he is backed into corner. All creature large and small is rise up as you destroy habitat and force it away. They will come to you too. Best be prepare.

It happens from time to time, I live on an island away from any mountains and I get one every now and again ....

They can spawn on grasslands. I know, i saw one in a grassland, and i live NOWHERE near a mountain/tundra biome.

Mammoths can spawn in grasslands occasionally. Not a bug.
