My oil paintings get really oily

Yeah, my painting requires around the same amount of linseed oil. It's pretty obscene.

I see, so the contours are what defines the cost in linseed. Eh, I'll have to dump the idea to use a texture in the painting (

I wanted to decorate a shield with a coat of arms:

But it looked too plain flat without any texture, so I thought I'd add wood texture myself, resulting with a tweaked texture + picture:

Which should've looked cooler, but apparently has waay to many contours. This is my first time using sketches, so I didn't know that.

yes well this is a too complicated texture - you could do like straight black lines to make it look like boards are there

While it might be not exactly what you wanted, but you can use the wooden texture of the shield itself at (almost) no cost by making part of your custom picture transparent.

How can you use that much oil in canvas that small?
