tracking scents

So recently stuff has gone missing from my study table in my village and we realised we may have a mole. I thought I'd get sneaky to catch them so another member of my village dropped my all access status and I 'stole' my own study table items, then put them back and retrieved the scents. When I came back a few hours later, stuff had indeed sprouted legs and left my table.
I tried to track the culprit by selecting one of the scents and tracking the stolen item. It pointed East from my village and I set off after it. After a looooong time walking, the direction cone was continuing to point me East despite the fact I had reached the edge of the map and couldn't go any further.
The item is still in the game world, but can't be past the edge of the map, so why in the directional arrow telling me it is?

Are you sure the items aren't in your study?

If they were why would the arrow keep pointing me east?

Because the game doesnt know where else to point. In legacy haven if you tracked yourself the scent would point south past the end of the world, i'm guessing it's a similar situation.

Don't feel too bad. It's not a well documented "feature". (A proper error message would probably be better.)

And lose out on all the tears due to people chasing their own tails? Not sure what you're smoking there.

Edit: Actually checked this, and you do get an error message when tracking yourself. Not sure what this was about.
