[default client] "file moved or deleted" after Java update

Postby Bauta » Sun Sep 10, 2017 12:22 pm

So I switched to Java 64 bit from 32. After updating successfully, the shortcut to H&H's default client didnt work; nothing unusual I thought, Java always deletes all old version files and something from H&H must've been in there.
So I re-download the client, and though the game launches, no application seems to be installed. I tried looking around for it in the appdata folder and such, but no game files seem to have been saved. As evidence of files not being properly saved, my browser (firefox) cannot detect HnH files in the location it saves them to:
After either downloading the client or pressing the play button, firefox downloads either hafen.jnpl or autohaven.jnpl respectively, but both are marked as "file moved or deleted" where their folder location would usually be linked.

How should I proceed from here? Fresh reinstall? Is there an uninstaller for the default client I should use? I tried searching a bunch of H&H related terms but found nothing on my harddrive.

Edited for clarity.

What does this mean? I may be a bit rusty on Windows since I don't use it, but I can't remember ever seeing anything like that.

It's a browser thing, specifically firefox.
Firefox's toolbar has a button used to check on current and completed downloads. This button also has the feature of keeping a shortcut to any file you save off the internet, so that you can open them directly from the browser.
So once a file has been downloaded to position X, firefox keeps a shortcut to X labeled as [file name].
The problem I am having is that the default client is not being installed on my machine after switching java version, and any files downloaded are not being saved properly (since firefox can't find them in the location they were downloaded to).

Man, simply remove all Java version you have.
To be sure also check appdata, should be in roaming, but check all 3 folder.
Reinstall Java, reinstall the game. You can also open Java from your control panel, delete temporary files, and create a new desktop shortcut.

I agree that an Installer/unistaller would be neat, specially for new players.
Well, for the whole client should be reserved more care for an easier approach to the game in my opinion.

Deleting the temp files worked. In hindsight, I should have expected that simply reinstalling without first uninstalling would leave all temp files laying around, even if it did remove old program files. Stupid mistake on my part.

Glad that worked out.

The thing is, there isn't really any such thing as "installing" the client. The downloaded JNLP file just contains URLs to the files needed to run the client, and the only thing that is persistent between runs is that Java caches those files as long as they haven't changed on the server. I have no idea why clearing Java's temporary files worked; unless the cached files were corrupted, but then again that wouldn't explain why Firefox wouldn't find the JNLP file it just downloaded.

Oh well, as long as it works for you. :)

Downside with this is that the shortcut created points to the cached file. If Java decides to shuffle things around, the shortcut becomes invalid. Of course, you can just go back and create a new shortcut, but it's an issue anyone doing this should be aware of so it can be adjusted.

@loftar: I think sMartins was suggesting an installer package for Haven so that JWS isn't used. I believe you've discussed it in the past.
