Cave in despite being within support range.

This must be one unstable cave, as despite putting in a support and mining out to just slightly short of the range ending I got splattered.

Perhaps I am doing something wrong.

Probably an edge case. I belive it looks at the center coordinate of the tile, and yours might be slightly off.

If it is the tile right to the left of the left-most mined-out tile that collapsed, it's pretty clear that it only partially covered by the support.

^ this also some advice use grid when mining it helps out alot and you can see the corners poking out of support radius

My tests told me: you're safe as long as the support radius covers the center of the tile.

A wooden supports can be placed safely every 9th tile (8 free tiles between them) as long as they're on the same column/row.
As it looks you mined the 9th tile one tile off the row of the support, that one isn't supported.

yeah another good tip is look out for the dust that falls from the grid you just mined. if you dont see any dust fall you are safe to keep mining but as soon as you see dust dont mine anymore without supports at that grid

To make this clearer: you can mine safely the 8 surrounding tiles of any tile that didn't drop dust when you mined it.
