towercaps

about a month ago i planted 8 towercaps (for quarry credo), so far i have chopped 4 down. second and 4th caused a cave in, i had not mined in that area for probably a year, was a 3 tile wide pathway going south. i have no mining columns/supports in this area as i did not need them to carve the pathway. the towercaps are planted center tile and have a tile inbetween them for spacing

are towercaps counting other towercaps as a cave in? and do towercaps have the correct range figured in? or is it just that they are really old towercaps and were before the patch for them being a support? btw the cave in was on the side of the tree that the logs fell, i never got hit

i really hope this gets fixed as i would rather not having to stop growing towercaps without supports around them to prevent cave ins
