There are ways to use more XP than you actually have (usually by "borrowing" from the future), making it negative. Not sure I remember all possible ways right now, but one way is to use hearth magic while studying curiosities. Curiosities check your XP when you start studing them but doesn't actually consume it until they finish studying, so using hearth magic in the meantime can cause the curiosities to consume down to negative XP when they finish. Not sure if it would be possible to reach -17k XP doing that, though. Pretty sure there are other similar ways too, however, but I can't seem to remember them right now.
