Friend trying to run game; never opens.

My friend was playing haven with me for a while using Amber client. One day he logged off and closed the client, the next time he tried to open up Amber, nothing happened. The generic Java loading screen showed up, but would then disappear and nothing would ever happen. No error message or anything. He has tried to use the default client, download the default directly, nothing. It simply never opens. We compared Java version and settings with mine which works flawlessly, to no avail.

His specs are the following, but keep in mind he played it before with no problems so i doubt it's system specs.

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit,
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8600 @ 2.40 GHz
8.00 GB RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870 X2

The video card's old and the latest driver for it is 5 years old.

I really don't know what other information i can give. It opens the Java loading screen, screen goes away, nothing happens. No error message, process disappears from Task Manager.
Total misplay.

There should be a log file on his computer somewhere called "hs_err_pid.log" and is typically in the Java installation directory if not directed to be placed elsewhere, but that's up to the app developer. I think everyone here has found it in that location unless they've somehow redirected the output folder on their own. If he (or you) can post that, then we might be able to help.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

What MagicMan said - also:

Start Amber by run.bat ... edit run.bat - put in a new line containg just the word
Code: Select all
pause
- save run.bat

i.e.
Code: Select all
start javaw -Xss1024k -Xms512m -Xmx1024m -jar hafen.jar -U https://game.havenandhearth.com/hres/ game.havenandhearth.com
pause

That way the cmd window stays open and you might see errors - the first thing that might give clues

Right clicking the top bar of command window even offers a drop down menu that allows some edit stuff like marking and copy
(and paste her)
------
Put Java (Path) into windows environment (so you don't need it to be edited in run.bat)

(be aware that you have to edit the Path Value every time you update Java)
