Accidental theft (plus annoying selfish people)

Postby newacc3972 » Sat Sep 29, 2018 4:42 pm

Apparently I can end up stealing from other claims even though I took what is actually mine, not theirs.

So I went on a fair adventure on a mountain for good forageables for studying (frog crown and the 10k L.P. 10q flower thing), and decided to check out some localised resources I stumbled upon. One Ice Spire was (very annoyingly) blocked off with multiple claims, so I decided to turn on trespass to get to it (no I didn't get any ice but I did inspect it anyways As I did want to know and it's just trespass no one will care and this mountain is EXTREMELY far from where I live)

Suddenly, an adder attacked me. I was on a horse, so easy snake kill boom trample it over like the slippery pathetic fool it is. And to claim my easy kill, I picked it up. SUDDENLY: SHP DMG A SCENT IS LEFT (I also had tracking on because why not) and I'M RED-HANDED (it expired now, but I'm an outlaw now). Wh... w- WHAT?! I killed an adder while I was still on the very selfish Ice Spire haggler, making the corpse of the adder HIS property alongside the very selfishly stashed Ice Spire, and I'M a criminal now?!

How claims & hearthlaw works should be fixed. I hear a less moral player than me has problems stealing by walking through gates he opened only to get "debuffed" by visitor and couldn't steal. Meanwhile, I'm a criminal for taking an adder corpse I made & is rightfully mine. This isn't the 1st instance actually; I killed deers on someone else's claim (they very selfishly covered up a lot of land they didn't use so I wanted to trespass) and I couldn't pick up the corpses because they became his property (I didn't have theft back then THANK GOD because this guy was A LOT closer to me and had friends with BRICKWALLS)

Oh. And fix it with people contesting for localised resources. People actively just BLOCK OUT others with fences & claims and that's unjust.

Note: I am not a criminal. I only have theft in case someone steals from me so I can steal more back as redemption & revenge. I also have rage just in case I want deeper revenge

The added was on his land in the first place, thus you killed his property and stole it.

Hey,
assuming the scent is still active I'd suggest you edit out where you left it. Some dude might be bored enough to go grab it, and enact righteous justice upon you for your crimes against the Hearthland.

It's criminal acts. Don't turn it on... ever. Well, ok, you have to turn it on sometimes because other players are assholes and block resources with claims, steal things, murder your favorite cow... Anyway, be aware you cannot selectively toggle different acts, though it is a good suggestion. Just because I want to cross someone's claim doesn't mean I want to accidentally break their fence down or steal a dead body.

If there's one complaint on this, there's probably a thousand. I know devs are aware of the unhappiness of the players about this. I don't know if there's any reasonable solution in the works. The door is open to suggestions. I haven't read anything that is better than that current mechanics in the means of being abusable. Maybe someone has a link of something I've forgotten or missed.

And it's worth noting nothing is rightfully yours in this game. The game pretty much works like real life, too. I'm a hunter. If I'm on public land and shoot a bird (or deer or other animal) and it flies and lands on private land, it is technically that landowner's unless I have permission to retrieve it. If it flies and lands in "protected refuge" areas, I can't go retrieve it, and depending on local laws, may have to actually call authorities and report that it landed there. If not, I could be found guilty of poaching.

Also, from a moral perspective, revenge, retribution, an eye for an eye, etc are all criminal acts, but ones that have been allowed in some societies. The logical conclusion of any moral arguments on this eventually lead to some party has to forgive past transgressions of the other party or you end up like the Hatfields and McCoys.

I think this is coming down to the concept of what rights are and core moral doctrines of various concepts that there aren't any hard agreements over, just different schools of thought. I'm not well read on the subject. Maybe the legally trained here can explain it somewhat even if not accurately. It seems that the game does try to follow a certain moral perspective of ownership and crime, even if not a particular school of discussion, then at least trying to set the base foundations for something simple, but that can have some depth for gameplay. IIRC, jorb has made posts on this in the past, but I don't recall off hand what I should search for or where I might find them.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

I'm laughing at the amount of self-righteous indignation in this post.

It's typical "I will turn criminal acts to trespass, but when I actually trespass, I don't turn it off then, next thing a I know, I commited a crime because I can flip a switch up, but can't flip it down right away".

If You know, your only want to trespass, turn off the criminal acts right after You trespass. Otherwise, it's your problem You left a scent and get red-hand or outlaw.

It's an endless debate depending on your real-life locations of living, rules or whatever. Two people can argue it it's okay to take dead snake You killed on someone's else property because "You killed that wild life" and they technically both can be correct if You take in the matter rules, of their own areas.

TL;DR - not a bug. Rather an error on players side.
