Can't craft scholarly accounts from barrels of [curio]

You can't seem to craft a scholarly account of cave slime or cave dust straight from a barrel. To be honest I was hoping to get a scholarly account of a whole cistern of the stuff, like a secret feature. Cave dust is so terrible anyway that I don't know if this would even save it, but I was still hopeful.
