Crafting orange pigment from a barrel of tar

I just lost 92 liters of tar from trying to craft a single orange pigment from a barrel, just right clicked on the barrel with the pumpkin slices in my inventory, the tar all just disappeared, and the crafting failed. Don't have any more tar to see if I can replicate it.

Maybe its intended and barrels have a random chance to have holes in them?
Or then you clicked a wrong barrel?
