I believe jorb has commented on this before, but sometimes you catch a fish that actually came from the trash pool - and that won't count toward a quest objective.

Someone else fished that pike then dropped it in the water. You fished it up as a trash item instead of landing a pike. No discoveries or other triggers trigger when you receive something from trash, whether it be beach flotsam, fishing or digging.

When I throw an unbutchered fish back into the water, I would not expect it to enter the trash pool. That fish is still alive it would just swim away and go on with it's life.

it's possible there is actually an issue with pike since it's been brought up twice now, or maybe it's just the most common fish to be thrown away.

that. someone from my village belived that pikes are cavefish since they never cought another fish underground.
they wher fishing in an fishless spot and pulled out exclusively trash
