A guy walked right through visitor gate and stole my stuff

Postby rfxDarth » Wed Sep 07, 2022 11:08 pm

So, I was being an idiot, and some guy threw a spear at me through the opened visitor gates and knocked me out. I was thinking that, being well behind the gate, I was in safe. But he just walked right in and stole my equipment. The claim was on my alt who's not kinned to the guy and all checkboxes for whites un-ticked. How is this possible? I thought visitor gates put a debuff on you that prevents any kinds of crime? WTF?

1: You can shoot through visitor gates and KO/kill people and it's not a crime.
2: You can loot bodies with visitor debuff and it's not a crime.

Bug/bad game design, should be fixed but who knows. Sorry.
Total misplay.

Have fun with it. Could've just traded the spear for it without throwing it into my face, though.

1. You sure about that? A crime's a crime, it shouldn't be any different whether it's melee or ranged, through gate or not.
2. That sucks. I can't comprehend any possible logic behind this, so it must be a bug.

By "not a crime" i meant it still leaves a scent but it's "not a crime" to the claim, it doesn't care one way or another and acts like there's no claim involved at all. sorry.

You misunderstand how visitor buff works

Care to elaborate? I haven't found any references to this neither on RoB nor wiki nor with a quick forum search. What part of it should I re-read to understand why would a visitor debuff prevent stealing, but not looting a corpse?

I read through this thread and to me, sounds like the problem is:

As far as the game rules / Hearthlaw is considered, no crime against the CLAIM has been committed. It was a crime to loot a body, but the crime was committed against the person being looted, not the claim.

Similar thing previously allowed people to bash other people's Hearth Fires while under Visitor status, because game only checked they were only committing crime against the Hearth Fire itself, as they have innate crime protection against anyone (excluding the owner) even when unclaimed.

Also, if you made the mistake of parking your character near visitor gate in a suitable angle, you could be aggro'd through the gate and beaten to death. This was only fixed indirectly when Visitor Gates were changed to be impassable while in combat.

So, chances are, tents and leantos could also be affected by this?
