Strange Resource Crashes

Postby RandySavageKiwi » Wed Oct 02, 2024 8:35 am

This is about the 5th item that has crashed my game due to this style of crash, whenever I log back in the item has loaded and I can keep playing.. until another item I haven't come across yet decides to crash me.

I wonder if it could be something related to this: viewtopic.php?f=47&t=70065&p=875111

If Loftar has implemented a system that "prunes" the problematic .res after a crash, this would 100% explain the behavior you're seeing. You could try to follow the instructions in said thread to completely delete your cache. (Or move it away, in case you think you may want to restore it. I remember having to share my cache file, but I think it involved some old custom client treating said files really specifically and being unable to fetch them from the server.)

Code: Select all
java.net.UnknownHostException: game.havenandhearth.com

why is not recognizing the host?
wonder if network is limited?
maybe test using ethernet cable if available?
or consider the clearing cache instructions in thread above

This. Do you have some strange network settings? Proxy settings or something? If you have a Java control panel, check its settings as well as the system settings.

Consider setting your DNS server to 1.1.1.1, or other reliable options out there, some default ISP DNS are very spotty and will randomly fail resolving domains.

I'm gonna assume you're on windows https://developers.cloudflare.com/1.1.1 ... windows-10
If not, there's options for other OSs on the same page.

I don't doubt that you're right, but the client retries >5 times before failing, and it sounds strange that it would fail consistently for game.havenandhearth.com, while www.havenandhearth.com would be available. Not saying it's impossible, but that's why I'm wondering if it might be some kind of weird proxy setting or something instead.

I've definitely had friends randomly crash from res fetching failures like this, while I myself have never experienced anything like it. The only notable variable here is that they have occasionally unstable internet connections (and they're located far from the servers)
I've never looked at the res fetching code closely, or how it handles its retries, but maybe these temporary hiccups can extend long enough to exhaust all retries?

Maybe going a bit off-topic, but I've also heard of other things like knarr and snekkja with custom image sails being invisible for sometimes a few minutes (I imagine while the custom image downloads), which could also indicate how long these network hiccups can sometimes extend for.

On the subject of the DNS thing you guys are mentioning, I've experienced something like that across multiple internet providers, multiple devices, in multiple provinces, etc. Sometimes I just lose access to the game & website simultaneously for hours at a time.

80% of us (or maybe more) are from Europe, hence why we probably don't hear about these issues so often. That doesn't mean they don't exist.

Another nice reason for clients to download all res files ahead of time... :|
