Harvesting Squirrel Cache twice is possible

You can harvest squirrel caches twice.

  • Approach the cache
  • Shift+Rightclick the cache as if you were withdrawing seeds from a barrel, for example
  • As you are no longer able to shift+rightclick the cache, open the cache
  • New items spawn - now you can shift+rightclick the cache again to withdraw all of the items
After that the cache doesn't regenerate and some time must pass in order for it to be harvestable once again.

I think this happens because cache contents get regenerated after it's opened when it's flagged to regenerate.

Is it a possible source of duplication exploits? Maybe... Maybe not? I haven't extensively tested.

Are you sure that new items are appearing?
Did you have space in your inventory?
This happened to me often, but usually if there was space, then all the things from the laundry stash were moved. But if there were no slots, for example for a squirrel, then the movement stopped there and then had to be collected manually.

Yes, and yes. The theory in OP is believable.

It really irritates me that I can't post here for no reason, but wait; Can you illustrate for us what 20 squirrel cache raids look like?

Today I checked - indeed, if you open the squirrel's stash after you've collected its contents using the shift key, there will be items inside again.

None of that worked as described for me. I rampaged through dozens and only once i got the contents twice. I suspect it was a cache already visited by someone else and (just guessing) that someone did not remove any items from it. im saying this because i got many caches not giving any initial shift-rclick items even if said cache had just two nuts in it. In fact all of them act like that, aside of that single one mentioned. Initial shift-rclick gives nothing.

Did you open it, look at what was inside the cache, then collect it using Shift and open it again?
Or did you collect it first using Shift and then open the cache?

And another question: there are 6 slots in the squirrel cache. How many items can there be inside? If without squirrels and the other player did not open. One per cell?

I think RoB wiki is pretty clear on the subject.
Code: Select all
How to Use:
Right Mouse Click a Squirrel Cache to see what it contains. (This potentially also refills the Squirrel Cache. ( #1))
Using Shift&Right Mouse Click will pull the items from the Squirrel Cache. (#2) (This will not initiates a refill)
So clearing a Squirrel Cache before actually opening it is usually the better method. (#3)
And a showing-empty Squirrel Cache might refill on opening it.

#1 "Potential" as the refill is time-gated (Time-gate time unknown. Reset trigger unknown, probably the refill action itself).
#2 Will ofc not work on a Squirrel Cache that's showing as empty.
#3 Will ofc not work if your inventory don't has the required free space to receive all the items from the Squirrel Cache.

Needles to say this is generally useful at the start of a new world (or your first character(s)). Not so much later on.

So what's the bottom line?
1) It's not a bug, it's supposed to be that way.
2) It's a bug, but it's not very useful.

I'd say it's an oversight, but it's largely so minor that it doesn't benefit the player too much. You basically loot a single squirrel cache twice, which makes squirrel hunting a lot easier.
