Increasing stability before next world

Postby shubla » Sat Feb 05, 2022 8:07 pm

Its been almost an year since last reset so maybe we will have another soon.

I think that before a new world the game should be hardened a bit against adversaries. Like last year there were ddos issues etc.
Also there have been frequent downtimes (at least twice) due to either loftars ISP or simply misconfiguration of dns server. I have faint memory of this happening some time quite recently also even though loftar said that the misconfiguration was fixed like a year ago.

One should act before the server is down with 1000 potential players waiting.

At least the resources and forums should be put behind cloudflare. Its free at least for the few first TB's, not sure how much you have to use before they want you to upgrade.

Would be interesting to know what level of traffic the site/resources/game itself serve. Maybe cloudflare would be way too expensive for any of this, as I'd assume that $ ratio for each gb served is quite miserable number.
Their pricing should be maybe 1$ / GB which is likely too high, but maybe there are bulk discounts? Especially if you explain that you are poor indie game dev.

I think loftar had some idea of renting cheap servers from hetzner to filter and route the traffic to main server, but he should setup that proactively.

One wild idea would be to have priority access point to server routed through cloudflare that you could get if you buy bandwidth credits. So when ddos comes, the paying customers could still play the game ¦]

The people buying yearly gold subs don't give a shit about this stuff, so there's no point.

don't contribute to the monopolization of the internet. don't use aws.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

Use the best possible solution, in such case aws is cheaper and better

But for preventing ddos attacks, supporting these big companies is the only option, others simply dont have the capacity.
No one cares if hnh is ideologically pure if no one is able to play it due to ddos. Ddos is so cheap that its easy to make the game unplayable.

In beginning of last world it happened and I think it was multiple days? Whats preventing the same guy or somebody else from doing it but for weeks, maybe 2 hours every day in primetime etc.
If somebody prevents people from playing for a few weeks during world start I'm sure that many just quit.

But wafv seems to only work for http web requests, also forces one to host everything in AWS.

As a general thought: yea it could be that ddos protection is simply too expensive. Games like hnh use way too much bandwidth for each dollar that they get via subs.
And if these products are billed by usage based on the assumption that service often turn very little bandwidth to very large profits theres no way. Would be interesting to know some actual numbers still, how much traffic the game serves if web is excluded.
