Animal Genders

Postby thrackerzod » Tue May 24, 2016 11:58 pm

I've recently tried to get into animal husbandry, but I've ran into a bit of a wall; I can't for the life of me get a bull! I've gone and trained 6 aurochs already and all I've got is cows.
Now, assuming that the chance to get either gender is approximately equal (50%) The probability of this situation happening to anyone is about 1.5625% (.5 x .5 x .5 x .5 x 5 x .5 = 0.015625)
So I guess I've just been screwed by fate, oh well right? I don't think that this needs to be a part of the game no matter the probability.
My suggestion would be some way to determine the gender of a wild animal before having to commit to train them. There's probably other ways to fix my concern, but this solution made the most sense to me.

If you're near 86,-10, I'll give you a free bull.
Sounds like you're super unlucky. I got male/female pairings pretty much first try for all my aminals.

An idea to consider: Tedium, a Feature.

Did you by any chance punched the animals you tamed in the groin?

Srsly tho, it's all about RNG. A friend of mine spent like a week taming all the sheep she could find, yet she had to buy a male ram from a neighbour.

As for pre-determining a gender, +1. It's not that hard to take a sneak peek, erm, under the hood of a wild animal.

bump

I believe a person with "animal husbandry" skill can distinguish male and female at least for tethered one.

1.5% is within reason. It's pretty rare we see someone so unlucky, so that kinda makes sense. Personal theory: like WWWs, I think where you pull your tameable animals determines gender. I kept taming boars I found beside my dock this world, and ended up getting 8 males in a row. It set our pigs back a good couple weeks.

Current mechanics aside though: I don't think there's really a good reason for players not being able to tell the difference between males/females during the taming process. People who are going to minmax will just tame 20-30 animals at a time to get past bad RNG luck anyway.

I imagine the bulls have a good laugh while you skeptically look at your barrel of aurochs milk after taming only males.

eh, some necros are ok. Like if each person gets to necro one thread a month max it'd be fine.

This is a relevant necro for a relevant problem/issue.
The sex of larger wild animals should be obvious for everyone. Have you seen a male wild pig and been in doubt of the sex?

its a clever bit of symbolism on the part of jorbtar about the unnatural state of the gender binary and how it is irrelevant within nature
