Stacks 2: Electric Boogaloo

Postby Dawidio123 » Thu Oct 05, 2023 5:14 pm

There has been a lot of threads (good share of them made by yours truly) so i'd like to recompile all the stuff that has been mentioned (That i remember without looking it up) before, in one clusterfuck of a post for the ease of digestion:

1.There is a lot of things that don't stack that should stack logically (I won't list all of them because i don't want to but feel free to add to my list and maybe I'll edit the post later (don't count on it)):
-Leaves (If you are so worried about silk then make all the leaves but the mulberry ones stack, i will just hide those trees then)
    -Barks
-Coal (I don't care that it will break some bots used to fill smelters)
-Wax (Can't you just lump it to together? Maybe make it something like ash/cavedust instead of stacking)
-Toads, frogs, crabs, and probably many others (If fish can stack why not them?)
-Bones other than the basic ones
    -Cloth
-Leeches (And make them able to stack on you, it'll be funny when people die to them)
    -Reeds
-And those are just the ones i noticed during my hermit testing runs, probably there are many more i would notice if i actually played since they were added
2.Stacks sometimes work for crafting/buidling but sometimes they don't, i have no idea what is it dependent on but it's straight up annoying to have to undo a stack to make it detect the items on the inside, either make it always work or never, but i hate this inconsistency.

3.Make it so you can shoot using ammo from stacks, will be really annoying to get bit by an adder just because i forgot to unstack my stones early on.

4.Make stacks work with portable containers, most relevant is the wicker pickers (Why would you waste a hand slot to get equivalent of 4 inventory spaces), but i'd also add creel to it (although it has some use due to unstackable fishing stuff and not wasting hand slot).

5.Why can't we make stockpiles from a stack? And why can't we just put a stack directly into a stockpile (or as much as it fits). I literally refuse to work with stockpiles now since they are basically inferior to a wooden crate in most cases (Maybe just make them work like unliftable containers that disappear once empty? At this point i wouldn't even mind that since they'd still be worse than a crate).

Edit: Will add things mentioned by others:

6. Plant crops from stacks

7.Allow people to right-click stacks to just eat one food from the stack (for fruits and stuff) without having to go through UI, could probably do this for a lot more actions like "study" and so on.

This is a lot more than one suggestion. I do find it silly and awkward that leaves and critters like snails don't stack while nearly everything else I can cook does, and bark has sometimes been inconvenient, too, but I don't think any wearable items, leeches included, should also be stackable.

I haven't run into a problem where stacks don't work while crafting, except in the case where the item is added to the inventory after the crafting window is already open. In which case, it's not a problem with stacking, it's a problem with order of operations. Are you sure it's not caused by something else?

Stackable leeches are kind of a joke tbh (but please add them it will be funny i swear).

But yeah i think the issue with crafting might be due to me gathering stuff while the recipe is already open (The last case that i recall was me gathering fruits from the trees with autostacking but i was unable to craft a fruit roast from them until i unstacked them). So you might call this an error on my part since i opened the recipe before i gathered, but, it works normally if stacks are turned off and you just gather unstacked items, so it's an issue with the stacking mechanic in itself (Why should you need to reopen a recipe to craft from stuff you just gathered?).

Please don't make everything stacks. This is a really dumb solution compared to just x4 the inventory since it makes more inventory actions for no good reason and obscures quality information somewhat.

The only sense of balancing and logic is if some things can't be stacked. I really don't want finished foods to stack.

You might be right, i just thought of sausages as something that should be stackable (As they are usually made connected to each other irl), but i now that i've given it some thought i would also prefer to keep stacks to mostly materials and not finished products. Edited it out of the main post.

I would have preferred just having more inventory space. If that would've made the inventory too big from a UX perspective, I would've preferred inventory tabs.
