Medium and small cattle feeders

Postby serVar161 » Tue Apr 14, 2026 4:19 pm

Idea:
Trapezoidal feeders made of planks with a rectangular feeding area.
It's preferable for the feeding area to face one direction, like the new small supports in the mine. The feeder itself should be located within this area.
The area for the medium feeder should be 15 by 15 (11 by 11 is also possible, but that seems a bit small).
For a small feeder, for example, 4 by 5.

Reason:
- To create small and medium-sized pens.
- The ability to control the quality of livestock feed without building a pen for each animal within the range of the current feeder, or at large distances from each other.
- Customization. Such small feeders would look good in pig or cow pens.

*shape, material, and dimensions are approximate. Feel free to add your own ideas.

range isn't the issue here, but imagine if these would be build into a fence, as a single fence section. if directed into a pen, it will feed only this pen.
Code: Select all
X----X----X
I    I    I
I A  < B  I
I    I    I
X----X----X

where < would be the directional feeder feeding only A pen

it would be an improvement, but in reality its just a patch on a patch of totally broken breeding system. as such, i doubt it will ever get any traction.

The idea was to have a targeted feeder for the pen, but the feeder could be placed inside or outside the pen.

To build small pens for livestock without the food mixing with neighboring ones. Using multiple feeders, you can build a pen for animals of any size.
Small feeders for "individual" feeding. Most people create communal pens, but some designate separate areas for each animal.

I hadn't considered a fence-mounted design, but that would work too.

Another idea was to limit the feeder's effective range to gates, fences, and buildings. This would allow for building pens of the desired size and shape.
The problem with placing such a feeder outside and it's more complex to implement.

The directional area is already there—replace the support with the feeder, replace the safe mining area with the animal feeding area, change the size of the area, and you're done.
I'm oversimplifying this process, of course, but it's easier than changing the feeding area based on obstacles (fences).
