Concussion too rough

Postby shubla » Fri Feb 19, 2016 4:10 pm

I got 42 concussion from 3 KO's because of bats and leeches.
In 2 hours it has healed 1 point (while energy is healing)
It seems to reduce 42% of my all abilities. Which is massive drawback on early game. For each 2 points that I raise my exp for example I only get 1 exp more..
Penalty, especially for new players from knockin out because of animals, leeches etc. Shouldnt be this big.

to go along with this, since you start with only 5k energy, which isn't high enough to heal. if a new player gets knocked out, its very likely they will stay at 1hp for days. if that newbie were to venture into a swamp with 1 Soft HP, its very likely they would actually die to leaches.

I think this mechanic is good idea but it's implementation could have been better.

Maybe reimplement bough and straw beds and make sleeping in them heal concussion faster?

It's also really hard to recover over 3k energy to start healing without screwing over your hunger bar completely (rats on a stick didn't give useful attributes for this character). Spawning at 5k meant reaching 10k energy - my primary goal - happened after killing killing my first bears.

I'm opposed to the idea of making FEP growth perfectly manageable on brand new characters. Being forced to eat berries and rats for inoptimal growth is part of the incentive to progress. I feel that nerfing concussive damage will have much the same effect as nerfing wounds to all be treatable -- you turn a system meant to add some difficulty and risk into an impotent bump in the road.

Getting knocked out is extremely common and a part of the experience of new players. You run into bats, you fight stuff you can't beat, you cause a cavein, fall off a horse.

One knock-out destroys an entire days worth of progress for several hours. Getting 3 knockouts effectively ruins your character for the next 2 days. As a newer player you are far better off getting killed and inheriting instead of healing the concussion damage because of how long the stat decreases last. That doesn't seem reasonable to me.

Having 50 concussion and a stat at 20 results in a 5 stat decrease. To add insult to injury the decrease is percentage based. This means for anyone progressing their character the decreases becomes worse with every third stat being negated due to the concussion. Having a 33% decrease to EVERY stat due to a few mistakes is fucking horrible. Players shouldn't be punished so much for something so common, especially not newer players who can effectively brick their characters and slow progress to a crawl.

It would work better if it was 5 damage or something small like that, instead of 17. That way occasionally screwing up doesn't brick your character, but being a dumbass will.

If you're being KO'd frequently then you're taking too many dangerous risks. I understand feeling like you Need to be mining and hunting bears on day one but understand that these are risky propositions and can backfire tremendously if you abuse animal AI poorly. Giving yourself a little bit of time to develop skills before diving for bats goes a long way.

I believe higherark was referring to situations like when you travel to your hearth fire and up right next to a boar (because you don't have a claim yet) and the boar proceeds to maul you. I was lucky enough to find Ancient Roots soon after, but not everyone is so lucky.
