Shelf rework

Postby jordancoles » Mon Dec 05, 2016 1:37 am

What is the reason for the way that you guys decided to make the shelves? What is making it hard for you to display the actual item on the shelf in the same way that they are displayed on study desks or barter stands?

I wouldn't mind it at all if you limited the shelf to 2-3 storage spaces instead of what we have now if it would mean that we could actually see the items that we have placed on the shelf

I think it's that way because loading individual models for each shelf item when you enter a room would be bad, especially if we're using multiple shelves in the same room. And also because some models, like animals carcasses, are weird and don't port nicely.

That being said, for me it would be enough if shelves only displayed curios, and anything else in them showed as that white box instead.

What? lol
You get like 100fps inside of houses

And animal carcasses? I don't want to place objects on them I want to place items

Somebody ask this one recent and what ven is put is paraphrase of loftar answer I think.

But ... it's done that way on the study desk, with things on the walls and with the symbel items, so as Jordan says ... why is it any different on a shelf?

It was just sooo disappointing, lol, rush to make a shelf to display my tin soldier and my bronze steed and all I got were a pile of books ... :( ... not that there is anything wrong with books, just these aren't even real books, they are items disguised as books ... lol, rip off! :P

This from loftar
It would, but some items, like dead rabbits, are trickier than others since they use custom drawing and whatnot, so it can't really be done in any general fashion right now. Also, the shelf in itself uses a form of quite custom drawing since it's hung on the wall. I do have some plans to reduce the number of forms of non-abstractable custom drawing, but that's a project for the future.

I am also, let's say, wary of the prospect of entering a storage cellar and have the server send information on all the 100k items stored in there. :)

Jorb also mentioned somewhere that different wood colors are another factor for memory load and lag, which is why not every woodstuff can be customized. I think it's a similar problem.

I don't have an opinion on this. It would be amazing to have all the minimal visual details, like items on shelves and in cupboards, but making the game heavier than it already is makes me cringe a bit.

Maybe devs are hinting about adding books!
