The New FEP system is great

Postby MachineLegend » Wed Jan 08, 2025 6:38 pm

Jorbtar just want to commend the new FEP system. As a solo hermit I think this world has been the best that eating and getting stats has felt since I started playing haven. It is really liberating to be able to focus on specific recipes that I have the most fun creating. Even more, combined with the previous changes to energy and hunger in previous worlds, I feel that eating and getting stats is in a great spot for the solo hermit experience. I can target stats to grow fairly conveniently and hunger+satiations still place a limit on the amount of stats I can gain overall in a single feast.

+1 epic change guys.
Is this the real life?
Or is it fantasy?

Some historical context:
-Food satiations were introduced in w8. They were nonsensical and/or completely random. I remember writing into the wiki page for 'Parasol Mushroom' that you may want to avoid eating it to not ruin your satiation for 'meat' type foods.
-Satiations would only reset once you had 4 of them below 50% - this made it critical to have an ample supply off drinks as you could use them to easily cause satiation towards that drink, and "shuffle" out undesired ones with careful planning. -Jorb made it bit better by having food satiate the food groups it was part of.
-Finally, he made satiation unique to every single food and have it only affect said food. Satiety restores over time passively.
-Some final tweaks were 1) you gain less satiation per food as the satiety increases 2) satiation also reduces the hunger gained which aimed to make it more viable to eat food at lower satiation, and I assume has been positively received.
-Drinks now give a buff counter that gets deducted as relevant food is eaten, with the benefit of gaining less satiation. I presume current system is much simpler/intuitive. Drinks are now only mandatory in the sense of minmaxing and can be ignored by casual players.

Technically, you're still "punished" for specializing into few recipes, but having just a small handful of them is probably enough for casual play.

The more recently added two heavy hitters are 1) ability to eat energy food without gaining hunger (you do forfeit the FEPs as well, but the main issue with this is that there's zero indication of this in-game) and 2) the w16 food overhaul where Jorb finally realized that the FEP/hunger is kind of important, and balanced the netire thing around it.

system is way better than before, but:
  • Questing for hunger is incredibly cringe
  • Hunger regenerates too fast - reset all at once every 2-7 daysish and the amount reset should be determined by how low your stats are compared to world leader
  • Tables should not have hunger modifiers, only FEP
  • I personally think satiations shouldn't exist, but unlike the other points this is probably not objectively right

Agreeing with first three. Satiations might stay.
Questing for hunger is worst in this list. Please remove it.

Satiations would be fine if they also reset in a burst like your hunger suggestion.

Overall I think this system is our best iteration yet because it's noob friendly and satisfying. Finally jorb's vision of eating garbage off the floor being something ok to do has been achieved.

I think this world a big improvement to the food system and has made eating infinitely more straightforward for new players. There isnt any more a case of "NO DONT EAT YOULL BRICK YOUR CHARACTER!!" at the start, you actually can eat roast meat now and you really cant go wrong with shoveling berries in your mouth.

If I still have 1 gripe with the food system its this- This world is meant to be a long world but I cant see myself quitting and coming back in 6 months or whatever because people scale basically infinitely there is not that much diminishing returns. Sure the difficulty level of gaining a FEP increases and you need to shovel more food into your mouth to make it happen.. or do you? cuz later on people are mass producing food like this:

So the scaling barely slows down its just linear. You come back in 6 months and you are just an ant to be stepped on

That's not to say I think 6 months of work should count for nothing but there is a middle ground to be found here

New system is much better that previous because we're not punished for eating random crap and can finally larp cook variety of food.

I also like current system, it feels much and much easier to gain stats early game, without ruining your hunger with inefficient foods. It becomes harder to level on higher stat values, as you simply need more FEP to fill the bar, so you depend on better qualities of food, table and spices, which is building a proper development curve on my point of view.
With hunger - FEP dependency it's now clear how much hunger you spend for stats you need, it also motivates you to craft more different type foods, so in general most food are equally good.

With previous systems I simply avoided eating anything but most advanced food, which I was only able to make and consume in very few quantities, avoiding hurting hunger and satiations too much.
