Naw, your constitution has already been hit hard at that point, so unlikely you're able to hold your breath long, let alone still stay somewhat conscious as you start to inhale water.

It's easy to imagine someone who's tired and worn out from swimming finds it much harder to keep themselves afloat when covered in horrible wounds and crippling things could die faster than someone who is just tired and worn out.

Yeah, we had people who would overtrain on swim team and who would cramp up and start drowning in races. Don't listen to the nuts at the gym who tell you to go hard or go home, if you're going to do a race then give yourself a couple of weeks or a month of down time so that your muscles and constitution aren't dead.

Without formal training people panic and drown easily. Hearthlings are probably doing a crappy doggy paddle. Worse, they're probably putting tons of energy into keeping their head above water. It's exhausting moving your head up once in awhile with proper form and training, let alone brute forcing it to stay up constantly.

That's why one shouldn't go swimming with a broken arm or leg.
