But I can do that without an idol or without any claim at all, in fact I'd argue that 99.9% of the roads out there are completely unclaimed so I don't understand how extending my claim for roads is a benefit.

It wouldn't, if we're using the resource example you still need to initially create a road to there from your village and if you want to port back to your idol from that location you'd need to extend your claim all the way there too. Unless it is acre clay or soil I see absolutely no reason why many people would even build a wall there at all.
Mostly this suggestion was meant to improve inter-village travel within your walls so if it could instead be done within a certain limit from your village idol that would also be acceptable for me. Although, I still don't see what the big deal about being able to put your hearth fire in a different location than your village would be. Would this offer a 100% safe method of travel? Yeah, I guess but only to one location and only if you move your hearth fire and only if you claim to the spot you want to travel back from.
