I would prefer the gating to be done via mechanics (like farming is time gated by WWWs drying and crop growing time), rather than arbitrary time limits

For the mine holes you could add long drying times, with the length increasing with level.

I'd like this to stop the poop sock rushing of early world. But implementing this in a way that doesn't feel artificial af sounds difficult, so I feel like the devs will mess this up horribly.

Edit: coming back to this post, the time limits just being simple pops ups like meteors worldwide is enough for me. Can always come back and iterate if it's good.

I don't know how I feel about that. With extremely long drying timers ,my guess would be that mineholes could be very vulnerable to potential attacks.
I can already see the waves of ragequits when some guy just bashes their badly secured t3 or t4 minehole, making them wait another 2 weeks to build it.
It is devastating for newbies.

This kinda sucks, the idea of thickening up the game and slowing things down is good, and they've been trying to do that anyway since at least Salem, but just putting things behind explicit timers sucks. I think the implicit timers just need to be rigged so you can't complete the game in a couple of days, but it's a complicated lot of values to mess with.

It's a nothink solution that solves quite a few problems the devs have been trying to tackle for ages.

The values can be tweaked as people give feedback but I think that a lot of them can be much longer than Snail's random placeholders.

The idea of lower levels opening can be special events, it can help to close the gap between veteran elite player groups and hermits, it can help split people up so realm villages don't need to be so huge and so rushed, it can help add longevity to the world population and let people play slower and more relaxed over longer periods. The only downside is that it's a slap in the face to the pvpers who are used to nolifing in massive early content rush villages to get ahead of the other factions but tbh respectfully fuck them.

If the game world unfolds in chapters it can lead to content being rolled out during these chapters, maybe it will motivate the devs to make actual interesting differences between cave layers and give them the time and ability to flesh out a meaningful endgame.

At the very least this is worth a try.

Isn't it naturally just like this. Without it being forced to an artifiial time gate

not even a tiny bit.

content is rushed through by large factions filled with veterans who know how to cut every corner and abuse every broken mechanic.

there are people killing mammoths, making snekjas and doing content that hermits take months to accomplish on week 1, if not day 1

edit: I guess any veteran is doing this no matter the size of scope of their village, but the point stands

The point of specific time gates is so that if someone starts playing the game from scratch 2 weeks later they're not 6 mineholes behind.

If you add long ass drying times, they're still 2 weeks behind, no matter how you look at it.
