The problem with literally any solution for PVP in a survival/crafting game where things take time on the order of days and hours instead of minutes and seconds is that there's just no way to make everyone happy.
Pure impossibility.
On the one hand, you have people who log in to PVP. That's what they want to do. They want to grind whatever it takes to make weapons, armor, siege equipment, and they just want to go blow people to smithereens.
On the other hand, you have people who don't want to PVP at all, ever. They just want to play with their cows, plant their flowers, make their buildings aesthetically pleasing, paint pretty pictures, and explore the world.
And then you have all the people that fall somewhere between those two playstyles.
If you allow PVP whenever, wherever, the second group of folks is unhappy and won't play the game.
If you implement strict restrictions on PVP, the first group of folks is unhappy and won't play the game.
But anything in between is going to be some half-baked, quirky, weird, "I guess this is how it works in this game" nonsense that's going to be full of holes and not really accomplish anything.
So the challenge is coming up with something that makes -most people- happy.
I've played a shit ton of PVPVE survival crafting games, its pretty much the only style of game I enjoy - and I will happily stand here and defend the system H&H has in place.
Of all the combat systems I've interacted with, this one makes the most sense and allows the most freedom while still doing a pretty damn decent job of protecting people that don't want to fight and don't want to be fucked with.
If you wanna be warmongers, you can go be warmongers - but there's consequences and it requires a justifiable time investment.
If you want to be a hermit, you can do that too - just know that there are people out there who want to kill you, and if you don't take the proper precautions you're GOING TO die. 100% inevitability.
That makes a lot of sense to me. I like that.
Sure its not perfect, but nothing is - and so far from what I've seen this is the closest. At least for my own personal tastes.
And truth be told -- I'm not even really sure what perfect looks like or if its achievable.
