the problem was people building cabins and crap before they had yeomanry instead of using leantos like the good lord intended

*sigh* this again?

Pretty much. People probably don't realize that right now everyone spawns in a really bad neighborhood and their first day should be spent getting the hell out of there.

How? Why?

- I saw beautiful videos that showed me I had to survive against nature and ended learning up the hard way, that I had to survive not with people but against people.
- I had finally found a game where I could build and craft at my free will, but had no in-game guide of how to learn the basics and the amount of info outside the game was so huge that took me lots of time to process. (I thank people that made the wiki and posted).
- Speaking solely of the game and not considering human relations involved, it was so complex that took me a lot of effort learning how to defend myself and to be competitive
- I know not all players enjoy forums but I do, and answers like “fuck off” did not help me feel welcome and I´m not saying this because of the times you say it, but also because the example is followed by others and many here take it to extreme.

I know I ´m not the average H&H type of player. This is my experience, but I have talked it with lots people and very few don’t agree.

You can stop reading here, but in case you are interested this is my brief starting story:
I logged into an unknown game where I was to survive with no in-game guide at all about what to do. Ok, I said: I´m to read wiki and forums and will learn game mechanics. I read also that sometime b4 there was a starter in-game guide that was taken down for some reason idk.
So I got Ender´s and went back to play and started being killed, my stuff stolen/trashed. When my pants where taken I also felt raped. I mastered the art of running from white dots and started to pay attention to rude/harsh posts to understand what was happening.
I said to myself, I´m missing something here, went to the forum and asked stuff. My very first post not only ended me being banned (by Sabinatti), but also got rough/rude answers. Totally not welcoming; and I understood even less what was happening. I guess they where tired of reading again and again the same questions.
I talked nice to people that I saw in-game and I was never lucky enough to find a non aggressive answer. After +/- 5? months I left a runestone to one that kept on stealing from me. He invited me to a village!. I was so happy!, also now I think I was lucky cos they did not oath kill me.
And then… politics. I was not only killed/griefed/stolen several times by raiders out of them having enemies, but also people that where friends with village owners stole from me and trashed my stuff. Village owners where somewhat kind (ofc I worked a lot for free), but I got very little in return. Some other new players there had lived b4 in villages where they worked as slaves and where killed just for wanting to leave, I guess again I got lucky at that time.

Sounds like everyone else's, minus the village part, first experience of H&H. :D

That is the nice thing about this game. If you are willing to use the forums then you already have access to How do I? thus making the game incredibly easier; especially considering most answers in that part are going to help you even if you could have simply searched for the answer to begin with.

At best I'd say you should consider making a guide & directing more new players to that part of the forum if they are having a hard time; as most will appreciate it if you run into them. Same rules apply as legacy H&H still though; s wandering for at least a week is going to be beneficial to anyone.

Heh, well, Cranny, it's a harsh world out there. I don't intend for the forums to be unwelcoming, but years of running this show has probably hardened my attitude a bit. You have to keep the rabble in line, you know.

Apologies.

The game could certainly do a better job of explaining itself.

You should at least have a pop-up at start to advise people to move far from spawn before settling.

This would help. Not everyone would pay attention, but less people would come to the forums out of confusion at least.

LOL. Perhaps the reason that people torture you is that you are AN INFLAMMATORY MORON.

I´m sorry, I do not enjoy making people mad.

well, here's my experience:

I started H&H on the "end" of world 7 (when ppl already could hand bash palisades with bare hands alone and such things), and it amazed me on the possibilities this game offers. I'm a UO fan, but always felt UO could have something "more"... and I found this on H&H. On world 7, I really didn't got to much evolved, because I'm always at a low peace when it comes to "lvling". I think I reached something arround 100 explo, 50 survival, 100 MM, never had mining, never used metal, just had a small farm somewhere. But 90% of the players I found where friendly, or at least "neutral" on not attacking me on sight!
On hafen, I started some weeks ago, but haven't played enough yet (I still have 30+ hours free play time from the initial 48 hours :P). I'm strugling to evolve since the best curios I could find are dragonflies with 10q, but that's ok. Today I was wandering, searching for anything to get LP. As it was in world 7, everyone I found was friendly to me untill now. I got chased down by someone with a sword and high q armor... when u'r wearing nettle pants and shirt, nettle BP, and someone start to chase you saying stop, but already on fight mode, what's ur first reaction? RUN TO THE HILLS! So, he caught me up, downed me, but didn't kill me (and I'm thankfull for that, and I'm not saying his name here). After a brief explanation, he told me he was trying to find who killed his friend, add me as a kin, and just left me free to go.
One thing anyone joining this game must have in mind: this is open pvp, ffa survival game. There'll be ppl trying to kill you! But at least, most ppl here are nice!
I tried another survival game from steam sometime ago, and THAT was chaos! You would build a house, leave the game to sleep, come back later to find out your house trashed and a gang of players waiting to kill you just for the fun of it! Most players didn't even wanted to really play the survival part of the game, their interest was on killing everyone and that's it. At least in haven, those are somewhat rare (or I'm luck enough not to find them :P), and most players will not just kill you on sight if you'r not a problem for them!

_______________

Forget everything above... just found out that wretched gore is impossible to heal, so, the character I created september 9 and got downed today is now useless, and I don't think I'll have the patience to make another one from scratch =/
