Bots are 100% neccessary for:
whales - everyone wants this nerfed
anglers - issue with animal spawning, kinda requires an animal rework
pepper - everyone wants this nerfed
truffels - everyone wants this nerfed
mapping - never heard of this bot, public map seems like enough
instant alerts on people around claims/thingwalls - could add some watch tower structure that alerts or something, but the main benefit is discord integration which I doubt we'll ever get

bots can be useful for:
farming - recent changes helped, idk how much
tree planting - setting up a bot seems more annoying than just using a timer imo
animals - if salt was nerfed we wouldn't need to eat so much, and wouldn't need to raise as many animals
steel - could just be made not cancer by not resetting
terraforming - could just be made not cancer, all the bot does is drop dirt on the ground over and over

Can you do the above without bots? Most of it, sure. Will it be even close as effective? No way.
Is it the fault of the botters? Argueably. Mostly it's just a problem of complete retarded tedium of basic tasks.
Don't hate the player, hate the game.

I find it funny though that people say bots are not that big of a deal, when the most broken things like whales just require bots to properly abuse them and are used by every big group.

Agreed, bots are necessary to compete atm, but they COULD BE not that big of a deal. Actually getting the devs to fix the thing is like pulling teeth.

Not everybody needs to be competitive. What the game needs is for non-competitive people to be good enough for the 1% to not be able to use them like a cock sleeve without even trying. Automation doesn't really affect this

This game is totally great for walking around and absorbing the atmosphere, they did a good job on that part. Many people would enjoy a few months of this if they didn't worry about PvP, quality grind, botting, or how someone was doing better than them.

When everybody else in my village quit during one of those worlds, I joined a big faction (won't name which) and the first thing they wanted to do when I got there was to see how I PvP'd and it was pretty fucking embarrassing because I got blown the fuck out and they taught me how to PvP and it's night and day.

For what it's worth, there's a clear difference in most PvP games between the average player and top ranked. Depending on the game and the rules, some things can go in random groups and pick-up games, but when you hit organized play, you might as well throw everything you know out if that low tier "rando mob play" is all you know. If anything, it's a sign that the PvP here has more depth than some think. (I'm still not saying it's deep like Chess or CCGs, but it's not as simplistic as some here try to make it seem.)

if all you wanna do is walk around and absorb the atmosphere why would you worry about dying - quality grind - botting? how would any of these affect the 50 year old facebook mom? I don't think everything your character has learned up till then should be deleted and locked behind einhar its just that extra weird step that turns people off after death they should only lose stats something completely irrelevant to these people.
see homo sexuality trending,. do not do that.

I just reread this and want to clarify I think the necessity of bots at the top level is still dumb, and for the most part very fixable with minor number tweaks. I just don't think it affects average players.

I mostly agree there, the people who fear death and don't have workarounds for it are really missing out. Somehow the devs need to bridge the gap for the 95% of players who needlessly quit. One solution might be to respawn you by default at hearthfire with reduced stat as if you'd gone to graveyard, and combine hearthfire with the ancestors altar. You can always click "New Character" if you did not want to respawn like that.

Separate from that, having a "Study Desk" type solution for the parts of the game people bot would be great.
