It seems to me multiple parts of the game were (wrongly it seems to me) mixed together as an issue.
One part seems to be the normal/minor stone-axe spiral.
Yes, you can push a stone axe up in quality. But its not a infinity spiral. If has a fixed maximum, based on the same quality resources and some of your skill levels. (Just 3 to 4 recursions are useful)
(+using a Star Shard in this process only seems to make any sense at the end of it. not at the start.)
RoB-wiki (feb 2024): Stone axe can be spiralled up by mining better stone and using better stone axes to split better sticks from blocks to create a higher quality axe, then repeating the process until diminishing returns.
This alone seems to be not very useful in the whole process. Just getting better rocks (and blocks too ofc) seem more effective.

RoB-wiki: Quality of mined Quarryartz appears to be hardcapped by Masonry * 1.5 and softcapped by mining tool's quality. Additionally, Quarryartz seems to have an exceptionally high max quality relative to the cave level where it is mined.
Last part makes Quarryartz the resource to look for to really speed up the stone axe quality boosting. But unless Quarryartz has no maximum quality ... I still don't see the real major issue ?
(Diehards have an additional way to outpace most other players ... They do that already anyway.)
