Sucker punches

Since combat starts immediately, and your moves are randomly displayed on numbers 1-5 there's a bit of an issue of getting suckerpunched. If a mob engages you at short range, they can get a hit off before you even have time to gauge which key to hit for a defense. Mostly this is a problem with hunting, but I could see this being an issue in pvp too.

Is it worth considering an Omni block weighted towards your highest combat stat that lasts for 5 or maybe 10 seconds when combat is initiated with you? It would give people enough time to get their bearings in a fight without being instantly slammed for damage, but since it's combat weighted it would only really absorb the first attack or so.

I agree with this in some. It lets people with lower UA get their damage all the way through even if your opponent has 20x more UA. As soon as you get that chop off before he has quick dodge up, the other guy is fucked. In addition to this, even someone who understands the combat system fully and has an unlimited UA would get hit for like 42 by a bat he didn't notice on the map/some bats he was under that aggro'd him in a cave before he got his dodge/sidestep up.

That being said, if you look at it from a different perspective it isn't exactly bad. It lets lower statted players have a chance, and requires you to always be diligent of animals lest you get caught off guard.

In fact I doubt that defensive maneuvers will be used much in PvP at all because it's so hard to always use the correct one.

Unlikely, IP based blocks have multiple styles later from what I've seen. Some will definitely get use. I agree pvp will involve a lot of circling and feinting, but that kind of goes along with the "one second of surprise combat and I'm critically wounded".

I get it's realistic that these exist, but I don't think it's a good game mechanic to have.

Perhaps one should start with a block, or somesuch. Idk. Will keep an eye on this, I guess.

It would let you figure out which key you need to hit to get things rolling for sure. Long as we're keeping with random moves it's of mild importance I feel.

If it's intentional, I'd like to at least see a way to initiate combat with a move. Right now, it's like you're shouting 'HEY I'M GOING TO ATTACK YOU' before you actually do anything. This is in particular annoying with fleeing animals (since they start running while you're figuring out your icons) but also very frustrating when engaging enemies without having enough distance between you to have enough time to set up a block (again, no problem for animals which instantly make their decisions the moment you engage them).

Don't all mobs start with a defence move?

If the sees an opening to hit you for HP it will always take it over a defensive stance.

I always start by throwing up my defenses, to be sure.

Shubla: There are also other reasons to play this game than to maximize your stat gain.
