Switching combat schools while in combat

Postby VDZ » Mon Sep 07, 2015 12:05 am

Right now, if you're in combat and you find out your moves just won't work (like being able to block your enemy's defenses, but being unable to get through theirs), you're simply stuck. It would be nice to be able to switch between combat schools in combat to change our strategy on the fly to avoid this and generally be able to fight more strategically. (Naturally, some cooldown on this will have to be implemented to keep people from constantly switching between their all-defense and all-attack schools.)

I get the impression that this is the point of the new system. It's going to be more about how you build your deck to fit the situations you're likely to be in and how you fit that around your skills. If you bring a cricket bat to a golf game instead of clubs I expect you to do poorly no matter how good you are at golf. If someone catches you unprepared and in the wrong school you should be punished for it. Similarly, you shouldn't lose your advantage over someone simply because they can at will change their fighting style. This will create more situations of unbalance, but life throws us things we sometimes can't handle and we have to reflect and do better next time.

If I bring a cricket bat to a golf game, I ditch my cricket bat and see if I can borrow a golf club. It'd be a hassle, but nobody's forcing me to play golf all the way until the end with the cricket bat I accidentally brought.

I agree that you should be punished for it, and you certainly shouldn't be able to switch at just any time. But if you spend a minute in futile combat, certainly you should be able to switch up your strategy?

You ever have your deck burned for losing a single match of magic the gathering?

Its not deck, deck may be gear, but you shouldnt have to preparte anything to be able to swig your sword left or right side.

Yes.

More seriously, though, this is exactly why sideboarding exists in MTG. Getting stomped due to deck mismatch is a huge disadvantage, but there's no need to keep bashing your head against a wall; proper sideboarding and playing game 2 & 3 well can still win you the overall match.
