Remove the specular/ shine on tar thatching

Or make it darker, we built a stone mansion using tar/birch/limestone thinking it would be a darker black and it has a weird shine.
Since I'd only imagine it would ever be used to make a pretty house, could tar look a little less... shiny? And more dark?
