Connecting rivers via survey?

Hello...looking at some of the rivers near our base, I wish I could just survey the necessary space between 2 river ends to make them connect. Dig them down all the way and have the river just spill over. Any chance that could be done? For that matter - home made ponds at spots where you can build a well :D
