Idea: world wipe - never again

Postby Sollar » Mon Sep 14, 2015 9:07 pm

I came up with an idea to have the world constantly changing, making it more dynamic, but without any need of wiping and ending it. Natural disasters. I don't know if your map generator allows it, but you could wipe and completely redo parts of the world map by creating a natural disaster. Unhappy with the fact that a part of the world got mined into exaustion and almost depleted? Set an earthquake. Give the players living in the area a warning, shake their ground for a couple of days, spawn some cracks in the ground as a visual indication of the affected area. In this time people living in the area should grab their most prized possesions, and leave. Everything in the area is destroyed. People should rush back in to settle on a new fresh land. Who knows what the force of tectonic shifting brought on to surface? Precious metals? Gold? Maybe people will start a new El Dorado gold-rush, claiming and fighting for the best spots? Maybe the best spots have their perils too. Who knows what mighty creatures lurking below the surface did the earthquake awoken. Same can be done with a volcanic eruption, leaving surface rocks all over the place. A mighty flood - could start with water rising more and more for a few days, then turn everything into a huge sea. Retreating waters should leave high quality nourished soil, that farmers could rush in to claim. This could give a new breath on later stages of the game. Fortified cities that no one can conquer having to be abbandoned and destroyed. People leaving affected areas should be aware that enemyes may ambush them while relocating. Cowardly scavangers could raid abbandoned cities with a great risk of losing their characters if the dissasters unfold while them doing so. What do you say oh mighty wizards that you created this world? Don't you want to raise from Mighty Wizards to Almighty Gods and unleash upon us the forces of nature? For a fee ofc :D

I like this idea, it would bring a use to the wagons getting out with a few items before the places kills you. +1 Jorb

This does not address the underlying issue of why world wipes are a desirable thing. Namely: Worlds stagnate after a year or so, one group 'wins' the race for dominance and noone else can catch up unless the winning group quits. All randomly destroying everything but characters will do is give a further advantage to those that have played the most

Oh, I can imagine resulting shitstorm when one faction's town gets consumed by an earthquake while other factions are left intact

Just make it something that only happens when certain conditions are met (something coded in as a mechanic, not deployed).

That way both groups will try to do it to one another if they can figure out the causes but if it complex enough then this is unlikely.

One thing that is very important though, have jorb promise not to use it on people who refuse to subscribe! ("You feel you should have invested more money in haven, the ground shakes beneath your feet")

Not how map generator works. Also not how compatibility breaks work. Wipes are done out of necessity and have never been done on a whim.

Dragons are the answer.

Irrespective of the question. I agree.

I recommend, next time you want to wipe the world, just spawn a dragon whenever a player is online which automatically attack the player.

To continue that post in the announcements topic that also mentioned dragons: I hope you are secretly planning on controlling this dragon, to destroy whichever village is the most dominant and wealthy.
