Foreage for some rustroot, go prospecting where you know there are caves (so you can dig from the cave) and you'll most likely find an iron vein.
In case you find tin, mine a bit so you can build supports.

4 hours is actually quite a bit. My guess is that the area that he's in is especially poor or hard to mine. It really doesn't take long to mine out metal with even mediocre stats.

sounded like he has just randomly mining since he said "4 hours of mining" and not "4 hours of prospecting"
