First of all, characters of multi-use do not store their armor inside of their inventory. They put it inside of cupboards/hang on walls (that happened when R'lyeh got raided).
Secondly, anyone who logs in while their village is being raided is dead regardless they have a shield or not. Maybe that is because it takes a few seconds to load, who knows?
Thirdly, no-one will log in to their main characters, if they know they are being raided. If they will do, only if they are sure the characters are safe (using alts to scout). If you did not expect the raid and to be attacked, you are dead inside of a closed space (since raiders will also make sure to secure the breaches).
I have participated many raids since W3. Been there, done that. Never seen anyone surviving in a village after logging in in the middle of a raid. Does not matter whether the dude had a shield&sword or not. Moreover, people tend to have several layers of brickwalls and might have their fighter character's hearthfire to be stored in a brickwall inside of the village.
