The end of hermitting?

Postby jippe » Thu Feb 18, 2016 1:17 pm

So.. great new implementations and a lot to look forward too, however as a very shy casual hermit I am concerned about my way of living. this world was great to just vanish from the "face of the earth" by walking a "few" hours and never got bothered by grievers. this now seems to be impossible in the world to come:
- small map
- extended river system
- random spawn

Was at least hoping that central spawning would be staying.

Will see if undisturbed hermitting is still an option in this world to come but I am not too hopeful. ah well it was nice as long as it lasted..

Well there should still be areas far from water, you can settle on those places. But i personally like to be near water.

you're not supposed to be undisturbed. see Developer Thoughts on PvP for details.

regardless, the new claim shield means you'll have a very decent defense. not many people would spend so much effort on just raiding a hermit.

btw, my walls were never breached in world 7 (they are still up even though i haven't been there in over a year), and i lived smack in the central area of the world.

There have been hermits since the beginning of time in haven. Worlds 5-7 had plenty, only world 8 and 2 were ridiculously large. You will be hermitting with neighbours is all. The new siege mechanics are in your favour as far as anyone can tell.
Lucky: haven is so quirky
Lucky: can be so ugly, can be so heartwarming

Isnt the new world the same size as world 7 was originally? Which was pretty damn big and people still hermited on world 7.

jorb wrote:[*] The map will initially be generated at a size of 250x250 minimaps (the same as worlds 3-7). We may/most likely will extend the map soonish, but the intention is to make and keep a significantly smaller world.

Also you can avoid that multiple hour walk to get away from civilization

it's not that big really. you can reach the edge on foot in like an hour to 2 hours. with boats on connected rivers... yeah.

People have been hermitting peacefully in past worlds with the same exact map size. What are you talking about?

ok..
I know that it will be as in earlier worlds, I know the view of j&l on this topic. just saying that this past world has been very generous to the shy hermits population. I am just sad that it is going to be as in earlier worlds (I only played since w7, where indeed I never was attacked).

I will adapt.. still it would have been nice to keep central spawning at least..

foraging is gonna suck with the wilderness being overrun by claims/ruins, that was a big advantage of the giant past world. but other than that i think hermits will be fine.
