Dont need those hats, let us have account bound pets, that dont interact with anything around, just cosmetic.
Nothing out of the lore like those silly hats, just regular model like squerels, bunies, ...
Some players live a lonely life ya know, would be good to chill and craft beside the fireplace in a rocking chair with the virtual buddy playing around.

Well, pets are runing in your feets or behind you, take 2 seconds to see its a pet.
Nothing weird, I guess in iron age anybody were wandering with a dog beside them.

I donno if they should implement new animals as pets.

Make it so existing animals are fun. so maybe allow people to buy a pig harness or a cow harness and they can ride around on a tamed cow or pig instead of a horse (once it runs outa energy it goes at walk speed).

Maybe we could equip the pet with cosmetic items, like a leash, ribbon, etc...

That would let us recognize it as a pet and not as a wild animal.

We could also simply add wolves and have them be tamable into dogs. Either would be ok with me.
