The way I usually orient myself is to click a random direction on the map to see which direction I'm facing, so having a constant visual que on screen would be nice to keep track of where I am and where I want to be

Whenever there's time, it would be cool if you could rework of the day/night orb so that it would double as an ingame, animated compass

I think it would look ugly.

+1, considering it's trivial but annoying to find your direction, a simple toggleable compass would do the trick.
