Why? You can't port to them like you can the charter stone so what is the purpose for this requirement? Let us place them underground please.

They can be used to get away though, your suggestion would make underground vaults more interesting than they should be.

May be related to underground vaults, more precisely to possible dev worry that with portico, it's too easy to take stuff there by having Portico and HF there. Note that I don't know if sieges no longer disable Charter Stone since there is no shield.

What's the difference if the portico is above ground or underground, it serves the same purpose either way. Let's say I have two villages both built on the surface, one has a portico and one has a charter stone, I get sieged at the village with the portico and I port to the village with the charter stone. The big ass surface villages are more like vaults than a tiny square underground base.

I built a fucking idol underground without knowing this okay and they can't be extended up to the surface and now I can't build a fucking portico so FUCK

Yeah makes no sense as to why its like this. In regards to underground vaults there now exists 9 layers -- so yeah a vault is already strong as no one is going to build 9 mineholes to get down to you. With the 9th layer being especially difficult for anyone to get to without meteor bars. That being said I don't know why portico's arent allowed underground and truth be told that change would do nothing but save someone 8 clicks (which might not mean much if Jorb gets around to allowing roads to traverse layers -- which seemed to be a will consider from him already).

Just got blindsided by this after activating my underground vclaim solely to be able to build a portico. What the hell? Why was this never publicly announced? I just added it to the wiki to prevent it screwing over other players, but what the hell?

Could have sworn it was in patch notes, but now not finding such information. They were able to be built underground at one point in time. It went from that in 2016 just after they were introduced to this thread discussing "can't be built below ground." (Several other threads with requests and questions in them, but no mention of "build above ground, pls!")

I had an underground portico back in W10 as I usually live underground, which was why this came as such a surprise. I've read all the patch notes through the years but didn't find out about this unlisted change until after I activated my W12 vclaim.
