Over the years I've seen lots of suggestion being shutdown because they didn't fit the "norse/nordic setting" of Haven. Then again there is already a bunch of stuff that doesn't fit that setting, so...

On the plus side, giving more skin tones means more customization and another thing to remember people by (especially those you saw and didn't get a chance to memo/kin).
On the other side, Haven has a bit of an history with racist players: from those drawing swastikas all around, to realms called "White Pride" and such. I wouldn't be surprised to find out a group of player is going around killing only characters with darker skin tones, playing KKK or some shit.

That being said, I don't really have a strong opinion either way. No new tones, darker tones, sparkly purple or neon green skins, or even RGB... The characters are already silly with their hats, I don't think skin would change that.

Taking into account that developers have nothing against swastikas and allow them in game, even though they're made with only intention to harass people, they probably do not care about things like this.

To put it into context, devs do not support this, they are just extremely tolerant even towards things that won't fly in any other game. (Remember that this is also a game where griefing is simply allowed, provided you do not use any exploits for it.) They only take action in extreme cases, like when last world one of the major realms was founded as 'White Pride', which the devs then renamed to just 'Pride'.

I refer folks to a similar discussions on botting and other such issues (management level game decisions) about how developers should or shouldn't spend their time. I don't keep such issues bookmarked. Before any more discussion on this arise, there are threads in The Inn on the subject.

This isn't quite an accurate reading of the situation, and a closer look at the thread you linked provides a more complete picture.

In the initial patch notes post, the devs only stated that they gave themselves the ability to change realm names at their discretion and changed "Player Population" to Balders Bra because, to quote jorb,

Take shots at the game, get blown out.

Jorb even expressed that he was unconcerned with changing the name of "that other realm"; only later was "White Pride" shortened to "Pride" and unlike Balders Bra this was at the request of the realm's owner. The OP was edited to reflect the name change but changing Pride was not the devs' choice.

By request from the Ruler of the Realm, however, the realm formerly known as "White Pride" is now known as "Pride". Updated OP.

I clarify because this isn't at all a case of devs policing that which might be construed as racism/hate speech and is instead a case of the devs willfully letting it slide. I can't remember the last time devs actually took action to remove something like this.
