Give us a way to deal with midges already

Postby jordancoles » Thu Apr 22, 2021 11:30 pm

Like 2 years ago you said you wanted to add a butterfly net to catch these little fuckers and you've been sitting on your hands ever since that idea went into The Document:tm:

Can we finally have a way to be rid of these things?

1 charge of soap and ????

In real life, for ??? you'd probably want to use garlic and/or fragrant essential oils such as from lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus, citronella, cinnamon or tea tree (not the same stuff as tea the beverage).

Closest things already in game for these might be leek, laurel (a relative of cinnamon), thyme, and sage.

pepper mint works great as midges repellent. we can have another spice and a repellent that might work as a buff when you apply it somehow on yourself. as long as you have that buff midges dont swarm to you and never bite you

Pine and spruce sap work well, you can rub the needles on yourself. Not to mention smoke, just standing around a fire often coats you with enough stench of smoke to make skeeters and such veer away for a little while.
Total misplay.

Apparently bog myrtle has also traditionally been used as a bug repellent.

I don't still get it. They are a minor thing, why people are so much against them? Do you live in a swamp?

Maybe people are perfectionists who cannot stand having 1 hp taken out of your 800 total away by midges or something?

Please explain.

Or is it your ruby snapdragon bot that doesn't like them or what.

Jorb just added malaria, and you already want more new midge features? Very well.
jorb, probably wrote:Added new item: Bug Repellent, medicine. Provides a buff/debuff which reduces (but does not entirely negate) damage from midges and gives a small stat penalty. Damages from midges has been increased to compensate.
Added new wound: Bug-borne Disease. Received from encountering midges without repellent active.

It gives you wounds (and repeatedly keeps giving you wounds) in your own base, just for being there, and there's nothing you can do against it other than going into a house and waiting for them to despawn. They spawn on forest terrain as well and you'll get midged even if you're nowhere near a swamp. Even if the wound itself were insignificant, getting punished for absolutely nothing is complete bullshit and feels terrible whenever it happens.

But the wound itself is also significant because it can combine with certain other wounds (including the likewise unavoidable Beesting) to become Allergic Reaction, which gives a significant stat debuff (-10 AGI and -10 STR) and heals slowly; furthermore, it can stack to give you several times that. If you do everything on your main, you have a high risk of getting debilitating, slow-healing wounds from running into midges. The only way to avoid this is to simply refrain from certain activities (like interacting with bee skeps), and mechanics that limit what you can do are generally unfun. Getting limited as a punishment for absolutely no reason goes beyond being just unfun, it's complete bullshit.

I like the idea of a midge repellent for game flavor, and personally yes it is annoying to get attacked in my own front yard... but midge attacks probably hurt botters more than they hurt me. In the long run, bot-based economy will ruin the game for most players. Something that's a nuisance to a human player but fatal to a bot may be good for the game overall.
