Give light a use in mining

Wearing a miner's helmet with its candle lit could decrease the ore quality variance of each tile. It may also decrease the likelihood of mining out monsters

I've made a post recently where I found a 64q range in my ore, which imo is too big of a gap. It might be a nice thing if nearby light sources (eg. a lit miner's helmet, torches, etc.) could shrink the quality spread while also creating a cool/sensible roleplay mechanic for the lighting system.

I agree with roleplay part but idea of messing with quality spread sounds weird. Why not just add a bit of convinience- faster mining speed for example.

I like the reduce of quality spread more than increased mining speed. Not mining in pitch dark in general could do this. Another thought is that some monsters could have a somewhat lower chance to spawn if the area is lit.

nice idea

I used artificial light in the past, but since dropping Amber client I got used to default light, always carry a miner's helm in inventory, plus it's a fair sink for candles

just miss irrlight mmap icon so I can farm them better for lanterns

+1, any mechanics that uses light would be appreciated

I think miners would be happy with a way to reduce mining into non-troll critters.

Funny how when they had a meaning everyone started using custom clients that would light up the caves, making lights useless. Now that it's lit up by default people ask for lights to be more important again
