Flag stolen objects

It's too easy for jerks to steal their own shit and track you using the scents to find the "stolen" object.
Stolen objects should be flagged as "stolen" and the scamming should end.
Especially when real money is involved, I don't know about you but that shit is illegal where I live.

They can only track you this way if their items are with you, so if this method works, aren't you stealing their items anyway?

took me quite an while to understant what you mean,
are you trying to tell us, somebody sold you an item, and before that, he would "steal" it of his own claim with an alt, to leave an scent and track the item and with that tracking you?

Someone steals item from their alt, beats you up and places in item in your inventory. You hearth to be safe, now they know where you live because they can track the stolen item. This is an issue as well as being sold something like this. At least let tracking identify it as stolen like scents.

There is also this trick where you get knocked out by someone, and then he steals your item and returns it back to you. He then collects his own scents and can use them to track you. Stolen items should probably get unscented if they return to their original owner...

Seems like the best fix;

I'd say at least double the difficulty of seeing a stinky item. Something like: seeing reeks of theft would require someone to have (Perception*Exploration) >= (Intelligence*Stealth)*2

I don't think it should go with tracking. This way you'd be forcing the high perc*expl to be the ones trading every time, just for a chance to notice this...

It'd be better to just require theft skill unlocked for that.
